Anthology of the most broken weapons in the history of Call of Duty

by Emma Hamill 10 Nov 2023

It's time to dust off the archives of the forbidden arsenal of Call of Duty games. What do they hide? Horrific weapons capable of unleashing unreasonable power, preventing any counterattack. No, this isn't Modern Warfare III's new Zombies mode. Let's dive back into the series' worst misdeeds with our selection of the five most overpowered weapons in Call of Duty history.

5. 205 Brecci

Call of Duty: 205 Brecci in Game

Foul play

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

Crimes committed

First up is the infamous 205 Brecci from Black Ops 3. It takes two shots to kill your enemy with this weapon, even at close range. For a shotgun, we've seen better. However, its power wasn't limited to the two-shot kill. Its mod-enhanced rate of fire knew how to tickle the nerves of even the most susceptible opponents. Enough to inflame battles and shatter friendships forever.

This rifle was all the more infuriating because it was so easy to use. Those who dared to abuse it could set entire rooms and corridors ablaze, leaving no respite from the slightest enemy pixel appearing on the screen. Needless to say, it was best to disable voice chat when using this ignominy to avoid torrents of rage.

4. M16 or AK-74u

Foul play

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on console and PC, respectively.

Crimes committed

For many players, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was all about the M16. Imagine the carnage an assault rifle could wreak with its combination of accuracy, high damage, and blazing rate of fire. If you had Opposing Force and a laser sight mounted on your M16, you were safe in the game. Understandably, it was common to see more than half the players on all servers carrying this weapon.

On console, the M16 was unbeatable. However, it also had a formidable rival on PC. Among the most hardcore communities, the AK-74u submachine gun could, against all odds, claim the crown over the M16. Strangely, it was more effective without attachments and had better stats without any additional attachments. It became a weapon of choice for quick maneuvers. Players could emerge around a corner and wreak havoc from tight angles with deadly bursts of fire.

3. MP-40

Foul play

Call of Duty: World at War.

Crimes committed

The MP-40 is probably the only weapon in Call of Duty capable of finishing the game on its own. Many agree that World at War was a fairly balanced game. That was without counting this SMG, which made your game hardcore, even without Hardcore mode. Its damage was as formidable as most rifles. This allowed you to prioritize the behemoth over the Opposing Force perk, which is essential in other contexts but superfluous with such a weapon.

That was a pretty good start, but the MP-40's power didn't stop there. It could also be upgraded with a 64-round magazine. In short, this weapon offered the mobility of an SMG, the damage of a rifle, and a capacity superior to most submachine guns. A true must-have in the Call of Duty arsenal. Unfortunately, all your opponents used it too, of course.

2. Grenade launcher

Foul play

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Crimes committed

Are you one of the veterans of these games? Sorry to bring back such sad memories of war. Players of that era systematically associated this weapon with noob tactics, hence the expression "noob tube" to describe it. The grenade launcher generated so much hatred that its use on Call of Duty 4 servers on PC often ended in an immediate ban. Some still have post-traumatic nightmares of the characteristic "thump" of the grenade ejection. You were almost guaranteed to kill someone in the ensuing explosion. As soon as a player used it, the fight turned into total chaos in two seconds.

For some reason, the grenade launcher continued to be a staple in Modern Warfare 2, taking it even further. The more devious among us noticed that the War Machine perk allowed them to replenish their grenade launchers. You can imagine the endless barrage of grenades during matches... To play with honor, players tacitly agreed not to use it against the other side. The grenade launcher became the equivalent of a nuclear weapon in Call of Duty to deter opponents. This was a shame for a game in which you could literally atomize your enemies with a neutron bomb.

1. Model 1887 in akimbo

Foul play

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Crimes committed

Modern Warfare 2's arsenal could fill this entire top 5 with gems, each as good as the next. On your left, the ACR: a rifle with so little recoil it feels like you're shooting a laser. On your right, the UMP-45: an SMG with absurdly devastating damage compared to other rifles. But in our opinion, no weapon was as fun and unbalanced as the good old Model 1887.

This lever-action shotgun of yesteryear was a true war machine. Imagine having one in each hand via the akimbo perk. Every player who used this technique felt like merciless gods, equipped with unbeatable firepower. The worst part is, we loved playing with it anyway. It was common to see these two deadly calibers whirling around in the cutthroats of Favela. Even at medium ranges, it was possible to fire both rifles at once to instantly explode enemies. Developer Infinity Ward eventually retired these weapons and put an end to their dominance. Before this decision, most modern assault rifles found themselves outclassed by their century-old ancestor, understandably so...
