Plot of Shadow of the Erdtree
The story of *Shadow of the Erdtree* focuses on Miquella, the eternally youthful son of Marika, who is also the brother of Malenia, goddess of decay. While he existed in the lore, through certain item descriptions and optional sections, this character didn't appear to his full potential in the base game.
Sentenced to eternally retain the appearance of a young boy, Miquella seeks to cure his curse and that of Malenia, turning to the Golden Order, in vain. He therefore renounces the Order to create the Sacred Tree, intended to compete with the World Tree, and falls into a long sleep within a cocoon. However, he is kidnapped by his half-brother, Mohg, Lord of Blood, who seeks to awaken him and elevate him to the rank of God. The Brilliant One can defeat Mohg before he succeeds, in order to leave him in his slumber.
In *Shadow of the Erdtree*, players must search for Miquella, who has exiled herself to the Shadow Realm for obscure reasons. The trailer suggests that Miquella is waiting for her "Lord of Promises" and is following in the footsteps of her mother, Marika, who previously traveled to this devastated land during a forgotten battle, set ablaze by the flame of a character named Messmer.
The latest trailer gives more insight into Miquella's story, suggesting betrayal and transformation after abandoning her lineage and turning her back on the Golden Order. The "Tyranny of Messmer" hints at the appearance of a new boss, while Miquella could shake off her curse and rise to a higher rank.
